17 - Just a Kid

Patches of sunlight beat through holes in the interweaving leaves above.

“I’m so tired,” Rebecca marched forward. “And hungry. And why the hell is this guy making us keep going?”

Ti looked back at their escort. “He prove himself to chief. Or do bad thing and must do this because punish.”

“He did something bad and now he has to make up for it by abducting us and giving us away like we’re property?” Rebecca threw her hands into the air. “I don’t understand these people.”

She grabbed a nearby red fruit off a vine and plucked the leaves off the top, showing Ti. “Can I eat these?”

“Will die,” said Ti. “Poison.” She held up her hand and curled her fingers. “Little bit in end of finger can kill.”

“Oh my God, I’m so hungry!” Rebecca looked longingly at the forbidden fruit, then threw it into the jungle, wiping her hands on her knees.

A spray of gunshots interrupted their banter.

Ti crouched and dodged behind a tree.

Rebecca ducked to the ground and covered her head with her hands. She was too tired to be afraid, but the adrenaline from the sudden movement sparked her eyes open.

The guard tried to hold on to his spear, his strength failing him. Thick red lifeblood gushed from a number of gunshot wounds riddled into his side. His wide eyes searched for the assailant, but his legs gave out, and he toppled forward into the mud, an arms length from Rebecca.

“Sss!” Ti tossed a stick at Rebecca, hitting her ribs.

Rebecca pulled her hands away from her eyes and looked around frantically. She saw Ti crouched, not far away.

Ti gestured toward their dying guide. She put her fingers up and grasped a pretend object. “Knife,” she whispered. She pointed back at the man, pushing her finger toward him so hard, she knocked herself off balance.

Rebecca looked from the bloody body to Ti. She reached for the knife strapped into the young man’s belt. Instinctively she pulled her hand away, her eyes searching the foreboding foliage for the assailant.

Ti clapped her hands. “Knife!” she whispered more forcefully.

Rebecca snatched the knife and pulled it from its sheath. She tossed it toward the tree, which Ti hid behind.

“Onde esta a outra garota?” an automatic rifle appeared from between the thicket.

Rebecca raised up her shaking arms. “No hablo Portuguese. I speak English y hablo Español.”

A thin, short boy pushed his way through the leaves. He looked no older than thirteen. He pointed his rifle at Rebecca’s face.

Rebecca heart flashed. She looked from the boy’s eyes down to the gun, then back up. “Please, don’t shoot me”.

The boy forced a menacing look that came off as desperate. His head darted back and forth. “Onde ela esta?” he repeated. “Voces sao meus prisioneios.”

Rebecca shrugged her shoulders awkwardly, keeping her hands high. “I don’t know,” she said. “I’m sorry I don’t speak Portuguese.”

“Eu estou bem aqui.” Ti slowly emerged from her hiding place, her arms also in the air. She glanced over at Rebecca. “He say we are his prisoners.
